The Mercy Centre (under the umbrella of the Human Development Foundation) was established over 50 years ago in Klong Toey, Bangkok, to provide poor children with the opportunity to grow and get an education in a loving and caring home environment.

Founded by Father Joe and Sister Maria, the Mercy Centre has expanded over the years to cover children and communities throughout Bangkok. Today, the Mercy Centre focuses on two main areas of work: pre-school education and the protection and care of vulnerable children. It runs 17 preschools with 956 students (2024 enrollment), from age 3 to 6 years old.

Mercy schools are certified by the Community Development and Social Welfare Section of the local District, and the education provided means that Mercy preschool children excel when entering the Thai school system.

Two Mercy homes house 76 children from 6 to 21 years old who have faced trauma and disruption in their early lives. Mercy homes offer a safe and nurturing environment, providing accommodation, full board, education at local schools and a dedicated staff. Children growing up in Mercy homes are encouraged to maintain contact with their families (if they have family) and are supported to become fully independent young adults and contributing members of Thai society.
