SUMMARY:Member Luncheon with EEOC Commissioner Keith Sonderling: AI in the Global Workplace
DESCRIPTION:AI and Workplace Technologies will continue to be the hottest topic for business leaders in 2024. Spurred on by the covid-pandemic\, the implementation of AI into our everyday working lives continues at pace. With Asia-Pacific as one of the fastest growing AI markets in the world\, several local governments have begun introducing various measures to regulate the development and application of this new technology. \n\n\n\nThe Honorable United States Commissioner Keith E. Sonderling will address the implications of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in employment decision-making and human resources. Employers worldwide are using AI to make employment decisions at every stage of the job life cycle\, from hiring to promotion to firing. AI-driven technologies have the potential to make the workplace more open\, fair\, and inclusive by eliminating unlawful discrimination from employment decisions. However\, AI can also amplify workplace bias if it is poorly designed or carelessly deployed. Drawing on real-world examples\, this presentation will provide an overview of the promise and perils of using AI to make employment decisions. Commissioner Sonderling will provide an overview of the legal framework governing AI in the United States and other countries to properly comply with current and proposed laws. \n\n\n\nIn light of Washington DC and other governments worldwide scrutinizing workplace practices\, Commissioner Sonderling will also discuss workplace policy\, regulatory\, and enforcement developments impacting all aspects of human capital management. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker\n\nKeith E. Sonderling\, Commissioner\, United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Keith E. Sonderling was confirmed by the U.S. Senate by bipartisan vote as EEOC Commissioner in 2020\, and has served as Vice-Chair since January 2021. His priorities is ensuring that artificial intelligence and workplace technologies are designed and deployed consistent with long-standing civil rights laws. He has published numerous articles on the benefits and potential harms of using artificial intelligence-based technology in the workplace and speaks globally on these emerging issues.\n\n\n\nThe EEOC is the U.S. federal agency responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person's race\, color\, religion\, sex\, pregnancy\, sexual orientation\, gender identity\, national origin\, age\, disability\, or genetic information. The laws apply to all types of work situations\, including hiring\, firing\, promotions\, training\, wages\, benefits\, and prevent harassment and retaliation. \n\n\n\nPrior to his confirmation to the EEOC\, Commissioner Sonderling served as the Acting and Deputy Administrator of the U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division\, and practiced Labor and Employment law in Florida. He also serves as a Professional Lecturer in the Law at George Washington University Law School\, teaching employment discrimination.
